Silver Ball as a journey through time

LEEUWARDEN – The Silver Ball, the last skating competition of the year, will be linked to Cultural Capital. And therefore also performed on March 21 as a skating theater piece.
Director Madelène van Beuzekom was approached to come up with a theater piece on ice that the audience will see as a supporting act to the sprint tournament featuring the world’s fastest skaters over 100 meters. “It will be an opening act of about ten minutes,” says the Lemster director. “Lead actor Rienk Nicolai plays the tournament director of 1862 who, as a storyteller, takes us on a journey through time.” During that imaginary journey, five themes will be addressed that have always characterized short track speed skating.
Van Beuzekom: ,,Take, for example, the well-known saying ‘competing for bacon and beans.’ That dates back to the 19th century and has its origins in ice skating, I understood when I did preliminary research on short track skating. But what about that exactly? That, of course, comes from somewhere. That’s what we’re going to tell that night.”
